In April, Gallery North’s featured exhibit is “Moment & Eternity,” an exhibit of photography and oil paintings by award-winning artist Wei Chen.

Well-known for her painterly photography, this artist uses an unusual technique to convey a very personal feeling of nostalgia in her work. Wei Chen uses light as paint and the camera as her brush to create surrealistic, in-camera images, in contrast to the traditional use of photography for realistic representation.

Wei Chen took a two-month-long journey through southern and western China, visiting many places of exotic culture and beauty. This trip was inspirational for her as she finally realized her dream of capturing the essence of a South Sea fishing region in a unique, woodcut-like style.

This show at Gallery North includes Wei’s new work from her painterly photography series and her Fishing Poetry series of photos taken while traveling in Asia in 2016.

For Wei, travel has been a great learning experience – opening her eyes to many beautiful things that are simply the daily life for the local people. Her travels have led her to reflect upon and to cherish the mundane experiences in her own life.

The artist said she found herself driven to record this sublime simplicity and share it with others.

“When you see people who still live a very ancient lifestyle, you realize that life does not need to be

luxurious to be beautiful or to make people happy,” Wei Chen said. “Being there and experiencing those fleeting and yet timeless moments, the simplicity and authenticity touched me. I hope that my images will bring awareness and a greater appreciation of life to my viewers.”

In addition to her photographic work, Wei Chen explores the medium of oil painting in this exhibit with impressionistic paintings, which also record the sentiments of her travels.

Growing up in China, she moved to the United States 16 years ago, and currently lives in Seattle. She has a master’s in computer ccience from the University of Arizona has worked as a software engineer and architect throughout her career.

The public is invited to meet artist Wei Chen at the opening reception for “Moment & Eternity” 1-4 p.m. April 8 at Gallery North. The artist also will be present at Gallery North during the Edmonds Art Walk on April 20.
