The incident took place near the intersection of Village Green Drive and 155th St. SE.

Fire crews from District 7 and Puget Sound Energy responded to a gas leak that temporarily shut down portions of a roadway on Tuesday in the middle of a busy Mill Creek neighborhood.

The closure was ordered after road crews from Snohomish County PUD reportedly punctured a two-inch pipeline while doing underground utility work near 155th St. SE and Village Green Drive. There was no report of injury and the road was reopened when the line was patched and the smell of gas had dissipated.

It took crews over two hours to dig to locate and secure the gas leak, according to spokespersons for the fire district and the city.  Residents were encouraged to stay indoors and close windows and doors until the leak was secured. Fire department personnel continued to check the gas levels until crews determined it was safe to reopen the road.

Everett Public Schools held one bus at Jackson High School until the road was reopened. Parents were notified of the delay.

Village Green will be reduced to one lane until a sub-contractor for Puget Sound Energy was able to complete repair the gas line and install a temporary sidewalk. Village Green Drive was reduced to one lane with alternating traffic until the repairs were complete.

The city advised people living in the area that the smell of the gas would linger, but there was in no cause for concern.

A spokesperson for PUD said the work crews had requested the underground utilities to be marked before the start of construction.

“This is a good reminder to call 811,” the spokesperson cautioned the public. “These were professionals. If this can happen to them, it can happen to a homeowner who is not careful.”
