Archbishop Murphy’s Holly Sudol wasn’t supposed to make the finals in the 300-meter hurdles at the 2A state track and field championships.

The junior has only been running the hurdles for a few months and had never competed in front of as many people as were at Saturday’s meet at Mount Tahoma High School.

“Yesterday, I PR’d (personal record) by over a second, so it was really shocking and I think that adrenaline was really helpful having all the people here,” Sudol said.

With a new personal best time under her belt, Sudol competed in the finals and finished in second place with a time of 45.15 seconds, less than .3 seconds off the leader.

Sudol’s state trip wasn’t done. She took home fourth place in the long jump and also ran with her teammates, Leah Chu, Claire Doud and Tia Asher in the 400 relay for the second time at state. This year the group grabbed a seventh place finish in the event.

“It felt good to make it solo, but also with the team,” Sudol said.

Despite this being just her first trip to state as a solo competitor, Sudol believes she can do it again next year and has her eyes set on qualifying for four events at the state meet in her senior season.

Not to be outdone by their counterparts, Archbishop Murphy’s boys 400 relay team of Raymond Pimentel, Max Kelleher, Rwehabura Munyagi and Kyler Gordon also competed at state and secured a fourth place finish.

Junior Samson Irish-Lodge competed in the 2A triple jump finals and brought home a fifth place medal.

Senior Munyagi closed out his running career by competing in the 100 qualifying round, while sophomore Ryan Kenny got his first taste of state track by qualifying in the long jump.

Discus throwers John Quinn and Martin Napeahi both advanced to state. Junior Quinn finished in 15th and his senior teammate Napeahi placed fourth.
