Conference to tackle environmental racism

8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Jackson Conference Center at Everett Community College (2000 Tower St. in Everett). The nonprofit Communities of Color Coalition presents the 6th-annual North Puget Sound Conference on Race, “Promises to Keep: Environmental Racism.” Opening the conference will be Nikkita Oliver, a teaching artist, anti-racist organizer and Seattle mayoral candidate. The keynote speaker will be Deborah Parker, former Vice Chair of the Tulalip Tribes Board of Directors, a legislative policy analyst and a strong voice for combating violence against indigenous women. The featured speaker will be artist Matika Wilbur, a Swinomish/Tulalip member and an award-winning photographer. The conference will include two breakout sessions with three sequential panels focused on the following topics: empowering, engaging, and equipping. Discussion groups led by presenters will follow each panel. This free event is open to the public and includes a full healthy lunch.
