The public is invited to the join the City of Mill Creek for the Mill Creek Sports Park grand reopening on April 13 beginning at 11 a.m. The celebration follows a more than $900,000 renovation that closed the park to the public for four months.

A brief ceremony and ribbon cutting will be followed up by a softball game between the Mill Creek Police Department and Snohomish County Fire District 7. Kids also are invited to be the first to run the new bases. Cookies will be served by the City, and other concessions are available to support the Mill Creek Police Foundation.

Additional parking for the event will be available on street or in the overflow dirt lot just north of the Sports Park.

The Mill Creek Sports Park first opened in 2004 and has been the City’s most popular recreational facility, serving more than 3,800 youth annually. The renovation included new field turf, which replaced the previous turf that lasted five years past its expected useful life. The new Musco light emitting diode (LED) lighting system will cut energy costs while reducing light pollution to the neighboring residents. An upgraded PA system will provide clearer sound. The City also added a 60-inch ADA-compliant gate to serve as a primary entrance from the main parking lot, replaced field fencing and netting, and added kick boards at the field and skate park.

“The field upgrades were necessary to expand services to more of our residents,” said Jay Sandstrom, recreation coordinator. “The Police versus Fire softball game will showcase the addition of new 65 foot base anchors which are used for adult recreational softball. The baseball diamond will now have multiple base length options to serve little league baseball and softball, as well as adult softball.”

Funding support for the upgrades was provided by the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office (RCO) in the amount of $250,000 and Snohomish County in the amount of $100,000.
