WIAA changes state basketball tournament seeding criteria

Jul 13, 2017

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) has approved changes to the basketball RPI (ratings percentage index) in place to seed teams in the state basketball tournament.

The Executive Board action took the action, as recommended by the RPI Committee, earlier this year during an Executive Board meeting.

The RPI will now include the record of out-of-state opponents in the formula. Schools will be required to track the records of its out-of-state opponents throughout the season to maintain accurate standings.

The RPI will also count postseason games, including league and district tournaments before the final rankings are locked prior to the regional round of the state tournament.

Finally, Australian touring teams will no longer impact the RPI, as those teams will be counted as non-varsity opponents and the games will not be factored into the formula.
