The Archbishop Murphy volleyball team is showing that it is ready for the tougher competition in the Wesco 3A.

In the first month of facing larger schools, the 2A Wildcats are 2-7 overall. Archbishop Murphy posted wins over Bishop Blanchet and Marysville-Pilchuck.

This week the Wildcats pushed Shorewood to five sets before falling 25-18, 25-21, 21-25, 11-25, 15-11 on Wednesday, Oct. 3. Claire Doud and Emma Feeney each recorded 10 kills.

“The change to Wesco has been awesome for us,” Archbishop Murphy coach Brandon Jones said. “We’re loving it. We don’t know what we’re going to face every night. We love playing tough teams.”

Jones describes the Wildcats as a young/old team. Archbishop Murphy have six seniors and returns four players who were either starters or had major roles last season.

Doud, Feeney, Ashley McCarron and Hailey Breneman bring solid experience to the Wildcats.

Sydney Pattison and Sophie Schutte are sharing the setting duties. “There is an adjustment period,” Jones said. “Everyone has a great attitude. They’re working really hard. Everyone is finding their spots, their roles.”

The offensive load is being carried by Doud and Feeney. Hannah Cymbaluk is providing solid defense in the middle.

“Her blocking is unreal,” Jones said “She is one of the best middle blockers I’ve ever coached.”

“We’re going to get tested every single match,” Jones said. “We are enjoying it.”
