Rainier Beach game cancelled due to a social media threat

Archbishop Murphy’s nonconference football game against Rainier Beach was cancelled after police reported that a student made a violent threat on social media.

The school learned of the threat on Thursday, Sept. 13, and informed police. On the advice of authorities, school and all school-related activities scheduled on Friday, Sept. 14, were cancelled.

The football game with Rainier Beach will not be made up.

The Wildcats were coming off their first loss of the season to 2A state defending champion Hockinson, who defeated Archbishop Murphy 42-13 in a nonconference game Thursday, Sept. 6, at Terry Ennis Stadium.

Hockinson only led 7-3 at the end of the first quarter but the Hawks outscored the Wildcats 28-10 in the second quarter.

“We had some moments of where I thought we competed well and moments when we didn’t compete very well,” Archbishop Murphy coach Jerry Jensen said. “There was a short time in the second quarter where we gave up a lot of points. You can’t do that to a good team.”

Hockinson scored two touchdowns in the final 49 seconds of the quarter to extend a 21-10 advantage to 35-10 at halftime. One of the touchdown was set up by a Hawks’ interception on a double pass trick play by the Wildcats that turned out badly.

“We called a double pass to try and get something going,” Jensen said. “That was a 14-point swing.”

Hockinson came into the contest with a decided edge in experience but Jensen wasn’t willing to say that was the main reason for the loss.

“They are very experienced. … We’re young,” he said. “That’s’ not an excuse. You’ve got to execute offensively and defensively.”

The Wildcats suffered a bad break when junior running back/safety Josiah Santiago suffered a broken collarbone. His status for the rest of the season is unclear, Jensen said.

Archbishop Murphy opens league play against Lynden at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 21, at Lynden High School.
