Archbishop Murphy is headed to the state regional girls basketball tournament.

The Wildcats punched their postseason ticket with a 48-34 victory over Anacortes in a 2A Bi-District semifinal game Monday, Feb. 13, at Mount Vernon High School.

Emily Rodabaugh scored 13 points and Chloe Morrison added 12 points for the Wildcats, who play Burlington-Edison in the district championship at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17 at Mount Vernon High School. Both teams qualified for the state regional tournament.

“We’re feeling great,” the fourth-year Archbishop Murphy coach said. “We haven’t done that since I’ve been here. It’s a great accomplishment.”

Though Anacortes had a height advantage over Archbishop Murphy, the Wildcats did a good job of boxing out and not giving their opponent second chance opportunities, Snyder said.

Rebounding and tough defense helped the Wildcats overcome a sub-par offensive performance.

“We struggled last night offensively,” Snyder said. “We didn’t move the ball very well. … We struggled to put the ball in the hoop.”

Archbishop Murphy trailed 11-5 after the first quarter but then outscored Anacortes 17-5 and 17-8 in the second and third quarters.

“Our defense picked up, which allowed some flow in our offense,” Snyder said.

The Wildcats beat Liberty 57-33 in their district opener on Feb. 10 at Archbishop Murphy High School. Rodabaugh scored 15 points and Maddie Hill contributed 11 points.

Burlington-Edison is similar to Archbishop Murphy in many respects, Snyder said. The Tigers like to run and push the ball in transition and they press and play man-to-man defense.

“We do match up pretty well with them,” Snyder said. “Offensively, we’re looking to have a little bit more structure and move the ball. Our ball movement wasn’t very good (against Anacortes).”
